The Bookmark is keen to stimulate community enthusiasm in all things literary.  To that end we aim to bring interesting, exciting authors to Grantown, both established names and those starting out on their writing careers.  This is your chance to meet the writers themselves and find out what's behind their latest book.    Whether you have a burning question to ask or simply want to sit and listen, these are informal and enjoyable gatherings open to all.  Most author events take place in local hotels and tickets will be available in advance from the shop or on the door.

"It was a real pleasure to find such a large and enthusiastic audience"

‘Writing the Mountain’: Creative Writing in the Cairngorms

Join us, plus special guest speaker, Polly Pullar, for an afternoon of tutor led creative nature writing as part of the Cairngorms Nature BIG Weekend festival 2018.

Beginning in the morning with a short lecture/talk on nature writing, we will then venture out as a group into the National Park where we will have the opportunity to discuss our surroundings and to consider the effect it has on us as individuals. Breaking then for a light lunch before taking some time to work on our poetry, prose or flash fiction, we will then present our work to the group at the end of the session.

Please bring suitable footwear and attire for walking in, plus a notebook and pen. Lunch will be provided.

Tues 13th Semptember 2016 we held an event with Catherine Czerkawska  for her novel "The Jewel" in The Garth Hotel, Grantown on Spey. "The Jewel" is a fascinating novel about the life of Jean Armour and her husband, Robert Burns. There was book discussion by the author and audience and songs of Robert Burns sung by Marie-Louise Napier. We had a wonderful turnout, over 40. See the author's thoughts on the evening:

The Bookmark is also responsible for organising Grantown's new Wee Crime Festival which runs in the autumn.  'Dark Nights, Dark Deeds... Death in Grantown' was a great success both in 2013 and 2014 and we hope to make it annual fixture in the crime writing festival calendar.   So far, the event has featured appearances by authors Lin Anderson, Malcolm Archibald, Neil Broadfoot, Graeme Macrae Burnet, Chris Dolan, Mark Douglas-Hume, Alex Gray, Michael Malone, Lesley McDowell, Russel McLean, Shona MacLean, Shirley McKay, Catriona McPherson, Caro Ramsay, Craig Robertson, Alexandra Sokoloff and Aline Templeton.
